Skills Academy Classes

Our 1-hour group Skills Academy classes are offered for all skill levels to allow each player to pursue mastery of the fundamentals of the game.  Classes are designed to maximize player development by providing progressive fundamental skill instruction, breakdown drills, and small-sided games to improve their all-around game.

Skills Covered:

  • Ball Handling

  • Finishing

  • Individual Offensive Moves

  • Shooting

  • Passing & Catching

  • Defensive Technique

  • Rebounding

Each month (May/August/September/October) we will focus on different aspects of these skills in various game situations.  The Rookie Skills class is designed for players to establish a solid foundation on basic fundamental skills such as dribbling with both hands with control, basic dribble moves, pivoting, passing/catching, etc.  If your player still has a hard time controlling their dribble, not really comfortable with crossovers or starting to go behind-the-back/between-the-legs moves, passing/catching, still needing help with how to pivot on one foot, etc. then the Rookie Skills is the right spot for them.

Classes are led by David McFarland with the assistance of another coach (current/former college and/or high school coach, former NKY college and/or high school player).

Skills Academy classes will be co-ed and split based on skill level and learning needs. Class size will be limited to 8:1 player to instructor ratio or less to allow more individual feedback throughout each class.

Location:  Hathaway Gym in Union, KY (Address provided after sign up)

(4) One-Hour Skills Academy Classes:  $100

*No additional credit card or service provider fees at checkout.

Shooting Foundation Classes

Our 4 to 5-week progressive shooting development classes (1-hour small-group class once per week) focus on simplifying your player's shot by eliminating variables in their shooting mechanics to allow them to shoot the ball more effectively and efficiently.  We will focus on balance, movement, and proper footwork in various game situations as we progress.  Through video analysis, detailed instruction, and purposeful drill work, players will learn how to develop techniques and habits used by Steph Curry, Devin Booker, Sue Bird, Klay Thompson, and other great shooters in today’s game.   This course will provide them with a blueprint on what to work on and how to work on it.

  • Level 1 - Stationary

  • Level 2 - Jump Shots/Catch & Shoot

  • Shooting Mastery - Continue to improve/fine-tune shooting form and footwork in various game situations off-the-dribble and on-the-move.  Each month/session will work on different situations.

*Notes:

  • Shooting classes are sequential.

    • For example, the Level 1 course is required before taking the Level 2 course.

  • Once a particular level class has been taken, players can sign up for that level again (or individual days of that class if available...email davidmcfarlandbasketball@gmail.com if interested) to continue to master those particular habits they need to fine-tune/recalibrate.

    • For example, Level 1 (Stationary) can be retaken before moving on to Level 2 (Jump Shots/Catch & Shoot).

-These classes are for current 3rd-11th graders 23-24 school year who are serious about improving their shot and wanting to put in the work on their own to become a great shooter.  Players will be placed in small groups based on grade within each class.

- Players should understand that it is a process and not a quick fix (it will feel funny at first as we are working on developing new habits and their work ethic will determine how quickly they become comfortable with their new habits) but will lead to even greater success for them in the future.

Classes are led by David McFarland with the assistance of additional coaches (current/former local college and/or high school coach, former NKY college and/or high school player).

Class size limited to 5:1 player to instructor ratio or less to allow more individual feedback throughout each class.
